Our Studies
Human:
Inhalation of bergamot essential oil has been clinically linked to improved mood and reduced stress in both workplace and healthcare settings.¹ Studies report increases in positive affect and reductions in anxiety, often accompanied by shifts in EEG patterns toward heightened alertness.² Bergamot aromatherapy has also been associated with activation of endorphin pathways, contributing to its uplifting and energizing effects.³ Human EEG work indicates that stimulating citrus oils, including bergamot, can enhance gamma brainwave activity — the state linked with creativity, integration, and peak mental performance.⁴
Preclinical:
Animal and cellular studies show bergamot’s volatile compounds (notably limonene and linalool) modulate neurotransmitter systems, including dopaminergic and opioid pathways, which are closely tied to endorphin release and reward signaling.⁵ These mechanisms support the energizing and mood-elevating qualities long attributed to bergamot in aromatherapy.
